The Unified Karate-Do Association

Shindo Budo Kai Shotokan Karate

The U.K.A. (Unified Karate-do Association) is dedicated to the traditional teachings of Okinawan/Japanese Shotokan karate-do. The association consists of a group of highly motivated, educated and extremely experienced instructors who teach karate.

Shindo Budo Kai Shotokan Karate

Shotokan is considered modern karate founded by Gichin Funakoshi. Translated it means; Pine Tree Wave (Shoto) House (Kan). Funakoshi used the pen name Shoto in his writings. (Shindo) translates to depth, elasticity and progress. (Budo) translates to modern practice of the martial arts and (Kai) to association. The style translates into the Unified System of Modern Martial Arts Association. It's basis and foundation is Shotokan Karate.

The name Shindo Budo Kai comes from its three distinct parts:

The primary aim of Shindo Budo Kai is the deepening of one's self. It encompasses traditional values and philosophies of karate with modern teaching and training methods. The system seeks to blend many fighting styles to create an effective fighting system and a system of self defense. The system is based on strong karate techniques and training as a foundation for skills, knowledge and experience. We utilize a freestyle combative format within a framework of safety constraints. Techniques consist of karate kicks, punches, blocks, and strikes, as well as kicboxing techniques. Training also includes falling arts, grappling, throwing, chokes, joint locking, and submissions. Sparring consists of continuous round fighting with safety equipment.

A common theme throughout modern budo is the perfection (or mastery) of one's self. Mental concentration ("zanshin"; a from of meditation or a 'state of awareness') is used to focus the mind (without thought or ego) and hard, repetitious training (including kata that mimics combat) creates a process of blending mind, body, and spirit that results in discipline, strong technique and self awareness. Technical mastery is one step along the road to self-improvement and insight. In short, modern budo has redefined and modernized bujitsu (older martial arts).

While bujutsu's goal had been to master violence through development of superior technical skill in order to kill other professional warriors, budo's aims are to control violence (self-defense) and improve the self. Customs and practices have also been altered in the transition. Bujutsu was once defined by the necessities of self-defense and the potential for combat in war. No longer as relevant, bujutsu etiquette and attitudes have transformed into modern budo. Budo provides modes of social courtesy, manners, respect, and correct form. In modern karate-do this applies to the dojo. In particular, to the conduct and practice of karate during training.
