McCann Sensei Letter
Topic: Participation

Your participation in karate is critical for your growth and understanding. It requires a commitment on your part to attend class sessions. Karate-do is a daily practice. Master Funakoshi challenges each and every one of us to "put karate into everything we do". The word "do" in karate-do means the path or way. You daily path is hindered when you do not train and practice. I believe that is always easier to do "nothing" instead of "something". "Something" always takes energy, while "nothing" is effortless. Master Funaksohi also tells us that "karate is like a pot of hot water, it requires constant flame to stay hot." That flame is your kinetic display of karate. Movement creates karate. It does not exist in the absence of movement. During dojo practice you must move with conviction. It is after practice that you must contemplate, think and analyze for the next time.

It is important for you to participate. As a member of the dojo, you are part of a larger community. Your fellow dojo karateka are more than merely other students. They are family, brothers and sisters who require your energy and commitment to better themselves. The principle aim of karate-do is to improve one's character. We are all spokes of the same wheel. For the wheel to function, spin and maintain strength, it needs of its spokes or it loses integrity and becomes flimsy. The dojo needs all of its members to function with strength and direction. It is in the dojo that you practice courtesy, respect, and the improvement of your character by striving to perfect your karate technique. These values and attributes will carry-over into all other aspects of your life. These include your inter-personal relationships, your job and career, as well as school.

I am truly inspired by everyone of you. I am extremely fortunate to have a relationship with you and to help facilitate your growth as a martial artist and a human being. It is an honor to share my martial arts experience. No karate teacher is a teacher of anything without students. I believe that I am the student who is enriched and constantly growing as a result of my experiences with you, my teachers. Your martial arts path will lead you to incredible gifts and enrichment. Stay the course. Remember the path is the journey without end. You must commitment yourself to the path or you do not grow.

With great respect and fondness, Sensei
