Shindo Budo Kai Belt Ranking Requirements In karate, a belt (obi) ranking system is used to evaluate merit and progress. The two basic categories within karate are student levels (kyu) and black belt levels (dan). The requirements for each level vary and work on a progression from fundamental to more complex. In Shindo Budo Kai Shotokan there are 10 belt ranks for adults starting from 10th kyu to 1st kyu. Novices wear a white belt (shiro obi). Requirements for promotion include competence in basic movements (kihon) and techniques, choreographed training forms (kata), sparring and self-defense (kumite). Each (kyu) belt promotion may take place after three months of training as a minimum. It takes a minimum of 6 months between each brown belt promotion. The next stage is the (dan) black belt rank promotion. It typically takes a student 5 to 6 years of training to be eligible for a student black belt. Black belt promotions take several years between (dans) ranks. They rise in order of 1st black (Shodan), 2nd black (Nidan), 3rd degree (Sandan), 4th degree (Yondan), 5th degree (Godan), 6th degree (Rokudan), 7th degree (Nandan), 8th degree (Hachidan), 9th degree (Kudan) and 10th degree (Judan). A 6-10th degree black belt holder can be awarded titles such as Senior Expert (Renshi), Very High Master (Kyoshi), or a Lifetime of dedication to the title of Master of the Masters (Hanchi). 1) 10th kyu Yellow Belt 2) 9/8th kyu Blue Belt 3) 7/6 kyu Green Belt 4) 5/4 kyu Purple Belt 5) 3rd & 2nd kyu Brown Belt 6) 1st kyu Brown Belt 7) Shodan Black Belt 8) Nidan Black Belt 9) Sandan Black Belt
